This Week in Review

This is the new weekly review of what I’m eating, reading, trying, wearing & loving to take better care of myself.

roasted asparagu Eating: Roasted asparagus! It's not technically local asparagus season with this crazy late spring weather, but in my mind it's April and that's when I start eating asparagus again. My favorite way to make asparagus is to roast it. It's easy enough for a weeknight dinner, but also tastes good enough to serve for a holiday or dinner party. Toss trimmed asparagus on a rimmed baking sheet with olive oil and coarse salt, roast at 450 degrees for about 25 minutes, until golden and slightly crispy. If you want to make it taste more indulgent, drizzle with truffle oil right before serving, which is what I did for Easter last week. Trying: Mini Hot/Cold Shower Detox (aka Hydrotherapy). This is one of the easiest hacks for a quick detox. I start by taking a regular warm shower. Towards the end, I increase the temp to as hot as I can take. When I feel super hot, I quickly switch to 15 seconds of cold water, and then turn the heat back up and repeat both about 4 more times. Dr. Mark Hyman recommends this in The Detox Box as a quick way to get rid of toxins when you don't have time to sit in a sauna or take an Epsom salt bath. It helps with circulation, helps prevent soreness after a hard workout and it's also great for boosting energy, especially if you do it in the morning. the light between oceans Reading: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman. I'm actually re-reading it for a book club next week and I still LOVE it. An Australian couple who lives alone on an island taking care of a lighthouse is having serious issues trying to conceive. One day a boat washes up onto their island with a dead man and a living baby. I won't give away what happens next, but it's one of those books that is both beautiful and gut-wrenching. I keep flashing back to pieces of the book when I'm with my kids, appreciating them even more than usual. I also love how I can picture the entire landscape of the island where they live. Has anyone seen the movie? Did you like it? Wearing: DL1961 jeans are my favorite and I just took my lightest wash pair out of the bottom of the drawer for spring. I bought most of mine at Purdy Girl, a local shop in my neighborhood, because I find it's hard to order jeans online. They sell them online and at several big-box stores like Bloomies and Off 5th. Their Emma jeans fit me like a glove and are literally as comfortable as leggings. I am on a hunt for another lighter wash pair for spring because my current pair is almost worn out.
