This Week In Review

This is the weekly review of what I’m eating, reading, trying & loving to take better care of myself.

Eating: Ramps! They're all the rage at the farmer’s market this time of year. With a mellow garlicky flavor and a texture similar to scallions, ramps are one of my favorite spring vegetables. I love to sauté ramps in olive oil and serve them as a side for grilled chicken or steak. Their mild garlicky flavor and light spinach-like texture is a nice contrast to a smokey grilled protein. You can use ramps in any dish where you would normally use scallions: Frittatas, omelets, stir-fries, soups and grain salads to name a few. Reading: Erotic Stories for Punjabi Widows by Balli Kaur Jaswal. Yes, there is some smut in here, but it's also a story about women in a Punjabi enclave in modern-day London who have been marginalized by society. This is not mind-blowing literature, but it is a good beach read so add it to your summer reading list. Trying: A meditation cushion. My sister sent me one as a gift and I am loving it. It makes it so much more comfortable to sit for the mini meditations I have been doing in the morning. Loving: This is Water commencement speech by David Foster Wallace, given at Kenyon College in 2005. It's the perspective that I need to be reminded of often. I suspect I'll be listening to it over and over. It was made into a book but you can listen to the audio on YouTube. Trust me it's worth a listen; you will understand the value in your liberal arts education. Here's the condensed 9 minute version that's a little saucier (text and photos added).
